  • I thought Buddhists were nice to each other; I didn’t think that they liked to kill people for religious reasons.
  • I’m saying performance-anxiety is a trap for those who are resting on great and precious promises.
  • But this is what I’m getting at, is that there’s an ethos here that if you really want to look at the vibrancy and survivability of religion in a culture, that’s what we want to look at and not so much whether these factoids are relevant.
  • Humanity has to find a religious form to suit the coming era.
  • In an even narrower sense, atheism is specifically the position that there are no deities.
  • The individual centre of power which each left behind on our planet extended for long beyond his bodily death, continued to respond helpfully to those who trusted it, but then gradually waned and will eventually terminate after a historic period has ended.
  • Americans are religiously tolerant, yes, but Americans are also wary of – it’s interesting.

The Supreme Court has ruled about a dozen times over the last 50 years on religion and public education explicitly, and it’s very clear, their position. It’s been pretty stable actually, which is that there’s a distinction between preaching about religion and teaching about religion. You can’t preach atheism, you can’t preach theism, you can’t preach for or against any particular religion, but you can talk about religion and you can teach about religion.

What impresses me greatly, and I find tremendously satisfying, is that these students seem to take it all in stride. They seem relaxed with the environment of diversity, and as best as I can tell, they see it as normal and take it for granted. Paul has already written about the New Covenant and its place in the whole of the Bible with a gifted pin . His posts are rich and thick with encouragement, good news, revelation, and truth that sets the captives free from the shackles of the deceiver. I would recommend to anyone with a clouded view of the Gospel to peer through the archive and bounce around the links and watch the simplicity of the Gospel of Grace who is Jesus unfold… their truly is joy with Christ and reason to celebrate our union with Him. We, as Gentiles, were never under the law, unless you consider the Ten Commandments the law.

I was not claiming that fictionalism captures the view of the majority of those involved in religion. Although I do think the fictionalist approach is more prevalent than many are aware of (e.g. in my experience, it is extremely prevalent in the Church of England) my article was focused more on what religion could be not what it currently is. Last week I published an article for the Times Literary Supplement outlining three alternative approach to religion, one of which was religious fictionalism. A religious fictionalist is someone who finds value in practicing a religion despite holding that the contentious claims of the religion (e.g. God exists, Jesus rose from the dead) are false.

We already have enough problems in America about religion. Why do you want to inject these problems in the public schools? Public schools should be sanctuaries from these kinds of grownup problems. I think this is based on a false assumption that is driven to a great extent by the media, that the cultural wars are sort of raging around religion. I’m of the party that doesn’t believe the culture wars are really raging out there around religion in ordinary America.

And if the Good Samaritan story is a story about helping your neighbor, why is that more applicable to immigration policy than other policies? I guess I have a nostalgia for those Bible debates about slavery. Why can’t we have a debate about gay marriage where religious people get – a lot of religious people read the Bible and don’t get to opposing gay marriage and a lot of religious people do.

Spirituality is an individual practice and belief, whereas religion is centered on a set of organized practices that a larger group shares. It is possible to be spiritual without being religious. While this is a basic definition, there are many different understandings of what religion is.

How do gods and spirits come to feel vividly real to people – as if they were standing right next to them? But it isn’t easy to maintain a sense that there are invisible spirits who care about you. In How God Becomes Real, acclaimed anthropologist and scholar of religion T. M. Luhrmann argues that people must work incredibly hard to make gods real and that this effort helps to explain the enduring power of faith.

Broad estimates of those who have an absence of belief in a god range from 500 million to 1.1 billion people worldwide. Scholars have indicated that global atheism may be in decline as a percentage of the global population due to irreligious countries having the lowest birth rates in the world and religious countries generally having higher birth rates. Religion and spirituality have been linked to medicine and to healing for centuries. However, in the early 1900’s the Flexner report noted that there was no place for religion in medicine; that medicine was strictly a scientific field, not a theological or philosophical one. In the mid to the latter 1900’s there were several lay movements that started emphasized the importance of religion, spirituality and medicine. Lay religious movements found spiritual practices and beliefs to be important in how people cope with suffering and find inner healing even in the midst of incurable illness.
